I’ve been writing about comics, in one form or another, for ten years… and the truth is, I’ve reached the point where I’m tired of it. I don’t feel as enthusiastic about it as I used to, for a number of reasons. Comics have become too expensive – $3.99 for 22 pages of a piece of a story is not a bargain. In Marvel and DC’s case, their superhero books rely far too much on continuity minutiae and excessive violence. And recent trends have made it clear they’re not interested in paying little more than lip service to the idea of multiculturalism. Yes, there’s still good stuff out there, and I’ve done my best to write about them, but after ten years… I need a break. I want to get back to making my own comics, which I started doing during my sojourn in Columbus, and I’m continuing now. But I need to get away from the industry at large for awhile. The Glyph Comics Awards will continue – I wouldn’t dream of giving that up. Great Black Comic Books will continue as well, however infrequently. When I have something to write about there , I’ll write it. Otherwise, that’s it – for now. My thanks to Jon Haehnle and everyone at PCS for all their support, and to you for reading.

Where as one half of an interracial couple looks outwardly at their partner, rarely ever getting the chance to make a side-by-side comparison, this is the reality of the child. These kids confront race in their homes at a very early age and it is vital that parents acknowledge, embrace, explain, and encourage an understanding of the differences their children see.

“The Painted Man is a collection of coming of race memoirs that finds a dad confronted by racially charged questions posed directly by his young son and the people they come into contact with. Throughout the book father and son attempt to answer these questions organically, through experiences and interactions, or by soliciting the opinions of professionals in the fields of Early Childhood Education and Psychology.”

In some cases, they like one but don’t like the other. With Eric, they sent some samples of these characters in action and what got me really excited is that Eric is as dynamic and exciting as his gargoyle action sequences are. He is incredibly adept at stopping the action and dealing with the pure emotion of a scene – sometimes in alternating scenes, but also inbetween the action itself. So, Battle is a great name for ‘Scourge,’ but he might also want to name himself Eric Characterdevelopment or Eric Rooftopdialogue, as well.
‘Meet the Haunteds’ is a perfect set-up for social commentary on everything from race issues to family problems,’ said Carr. ‘This is another wonderful property from Platinum Studios, which is turning itself into the go-to independent comic book company.’”

Remember, he only picks the comic shop that’s the most sincere, so be sure yours is full of sincerity if you want him to… alright, alright, that’s not what really happens. (But wouldn’t it be cool if it did?)

So yeah, participating comic shops across the country will once again give away free comic samplers that they had to pay for themselves. Check with your local shop to see if there are any additional events, like sales or creator signings, planned. Among this year’s batch of free comics includes the Radical Publishing sampler, which will contain the first eight pages of After Dark, the forthcoming sci-fi book conceived by Wesley Snipes and Antoine Fuqua (and written by Peter Milligan).

“…Riverdale is a tolerant town and everybody is welcome in Riverdale. With this whole diversity movement we’re working on, we couldn’t not have a gay character. Everybody has to be invited along… We do have Jon Goldwater, our new CEO, and he’s behind this idea to keep things moving forward. And we’ve got new blood in the company. We’ve always tried to be diverse and in the past several years we’ve gotten really aggressive with that and have brought in a lot of different ethnicities, and we’ll continue to do that this year. It’s just about being relevant and modern.”

This article, coming as it does in the wake of the news about a gay character being introduced into the Archie-verse (though we all know who was really on the down-low), has relevance for readers of this blog as well. We saw writer Alex Simmons write some Chuck stories last year (and he’s up for a Glyph Comics Award this year), plus there’s the current storyline involving Archie and Pussycat Valerie, so it does indeed appear as if the Archie-verse is expanding in all directions.

Y’know, this is slowly becoming almost as ridiculous as the Muhammad cartoon controversy, which has recently spun off onto some bizarre tangents. No one’s died over Tintin in the Congo yet, but the length of this campaign makes me think some perspective may be necessary. No one denies that the images of Africans in the book are stereotypical, and I realize that Tintin is as big in Europe as Spider-Man is here, but the specific targeting of this one particular graphic novel made decades ago in a less enlightened time (relatively speaking, of course) makes me wonder: why stop here? Why not go after more comics with images we don’t like? Hell, why stop with comics? Would an introductory essay to put the book in historical context really not be enough to appease these people? I suspect not, and that’s unfortunate, to say the least. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, art has the ability to provoke, and how we respond to these images says as much, if not more, than the images themselves.
