New Era fitteds (also known as 59Fifties or “tight lids”) have long been rocked by pro baseball players and hip-hop heads alike. Now the company has started making DC & Marvel logo branded caps. And with colors relating to the classic palette of each character, the results can be classic, or tragic. But that shouldn’t stop these things from becoming popular additions to the modern hip-hop wardrobe.
Plenty of hip-hop heads are closet or former comic book nerds. Think not? Rappers are probably the most well-known “celebrities who are into comics”. They LOVE old-school superhero shit.
Beyond that, hip-hop is bold and outrageous and always looking to be on some new shit — and as the style reflects the music, it’s made for plenty of loud, often laughable fashion moments in its history. Which is why I think the garish colorways should make the New Era superhero caps even more popular with the hip-hop crowd.
Of course, when I say something has a hip-hop sensibility, I probably have a seriously dated definition of what’s “hip-hop” — after all I think the majority of the music released in the past decade sucks. And I still curl the brim of my cap like we did back in the day, while anyone renotely in tune with street trends knows you need to keep that shit totally flat. Heck even if your only exposure to urban kids was watching The Wire, you know that’s how Marlo Stanfield rocked his.
Who can even say how would-be fashionistas like Kanye or Pharrell have affected hip-hop fashion, but I can picture kids rocking New Era superhero caps to match their bright-ass polos. And hey, if you’re 30-plus like Jay-Z and you need something less gaudy to go with your button-up shirts & suits, there’s always the safety of the basic black & white or grey & black caps.
Or maybe I’m completely wrong and the only people buying these things will be the same kids already rocking Marvel & DC graphic tees…
UPDATE: Many stores don’t have the New Era superhero caps yet as Diamond only recently started carrying them, but they are all on sale for 25% off at
MidtownComics.com until October 28th. On top of this, Midtown has some exclusive colorways (including the all black hats, if you can call that a color combo). Check out the entire line here.
