Marguerite Abouet
Aya

“I feel like girls were not really involved in comics, and comics were not really for girls. I hated when I was young to read superheroes. Except for Spider-Man. He was a normal guy — he was having affairs with girls. He had complicated stories with girls and his aunt and everything, so I felt he was closer to me. And he was beautiful also. I was in love with Spider-Man. But otherwise I didn’t feel close to the superheroes. I wasn’t concerned with them. And now with [Marjane] Satrapi and [Joann] Sfar, who are telling real stories about real life, there are more and more women doing comics and graphic novels. So now it’s really open to a broader audience, including girls.” – from her Bookslut interview

Marc Bernardin & Adam Freeman
Monster Attack Network

“At the risk of sounding all Neil Gaiman-y, I just like telling stories. (And, don’t tell my bosses, but I’ve never really considered myself a ‘journalist.’ I’m just not that curious. I like my nose, hence my dislike of sticking it in places it’s not welcome. I’ve got a friend who used to ride along with Miami Dade cops, just for fun. Not me.) There’s definitely a satisfaction that comes with editing a story for the magazine and seeing it land just right. Or in writing a review of a book or a DVD or a movie that perfectly sums up how I feel about it, good or bad. But I just wanna bring the stories to the people, be they mine or someone else’s. One of the things I’m most proud of in my 10 years at EW [Entertainment Weekly] was getting that Watchmen Oral History into the magazine. It’s a story I just really wanted to read. Same with the comics stuff: these are all stories that I want to read. Desperately. And if you’d like to take a look, I’m all for the sharing. And the caring. And the borderline inappropriate hugging.” – Bernardin, from an interview at the Newsarama blog

Mark Haven Britt
Full Color

“[September 11] was a weird time in New York… We just watched all these people die in their offices. People working away just like you and me. Why the fuck was I standing there on a rooftop with someone I loathed? What was I doing at this job? What were any of us doing? I think everyone was reassessing. The funny thing is that when I first wrote [Full Color] I thought that this book was a pulpy thrill ride. It kind of is. It moves along. However, I think the underlying issues I was dealing with at the time took over and made this book into something else. This book was how I reassessed.” – from his CBR interview

Korby Marks
Stormbringers

“Creating Stormbringers, developing the characters and being able to write without interruption has been my most rewarding experience. Every now and again I ask myself the question, ‘Why did you give up the comfort of steady income and a really good job to become an entrepreneur and risk losing all your money and failing?’ And the answer is always, ‘Because knowing is better than wondering.’” – from his UVC interview
