Fredric Wertham and race

Posted by: Rich Watson on December 12, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Anybody who’s been around in comics longer than the last X-Men movie knows who Dr. Fredric Wertham is – he’s the psychologist whose book, Seduction of the Innocent, led to a witch hunt on comics during the 1950’s. Turns out he had some views about race as depicted in comics as well. Somebody posted some pages from Seduction online, and Valerie D’Orazio, in her wonderful blog Occasional Superheroine, highlights a section in which Wertham discusses how he thought minorities should be depicted in comics. The answer may surprise you. (You’ll have to scroll down a bit for it; this post has other stuff in it too.)
