A Look Back at the San Diego Comic Con

By: Lauren Perry

Every year artists, writers, editors, actors, models, directors, dealers, and fans overtake the San Diego convention center for four days of the largest comic book and pop culture convention in the United States. Last year over 87,000 people attended the event and this year was even crazier. The main exhibit hall spans over 460,00 square feet, making it nearly impossible experience and see all the convention has to offer. Many of the professionals never even have the opportunity to leave their tables. Buzzscope decided to seek out some of these artists and writers and photograph them hard at work.

Patrick the Wolf Boy creators, Art and Franco, were as friendly and goofy as ever. They were ready for a busy weekend at the Comicon and even debuted a prototype for a possible Patrick figure.

Tom Hodges attempted to keep his eyes open after a long day of sketching.

Buzz took a minute from his commission to smile for a photo and talk about his current project with Chaos.

Chance Boren, editorial assistant for IDW, relaxed for a minute before the doors opened and thousands of people overtook the show floor.

Chris Moreno (Dracula vs King Arthur) and Josh Medors (Runes of Ragnon) showed off their current projects, both of which are being published through Silent Devil Productions, and their abilities to look hot in hats.

Christian Beranek, co-writer of Dracula vs King Arthur and one of the founders of Silent Devil, worked hard to promote both Dracula and Runes the entire convention.

Eric Powell, winner of two Eisners this year for his comic The Goon, continued to be as modest and sweet as ever even after he walked away with the awards.

Ken Lillie-Paetz (Co-creator of Monkey vs Lemur and the creator of Elsinore) showed off his fabulous sense of style by GQ-ing it up at the Alias booth.

Vice President of BroadSword Comics and creator of School Bites, Holly Golightly, sketched for her adoring fans. Don't forget to pick up issue two of School Bites to find out what's been going on with Cherri Creeper.

Jennifer De Guzman, editor and chief of Slave Labor Graphics, discussed current and upcoming projects for SLG including a Disney themed line-up of books, during a panel on Saturday afternoon.

The hot new artist taking over Fathom, Koi Turnball, was busy with commissions at the Aspen booth the entire convention.

Marshell Dillon from Devil's Due stopped by the Alias booth dressed to kill and ready for a busy weekend.

San Diego was BroadSword's only convention appearance this year, so needless to say, their booth was busy nonstop. Assistant colorist, Meredith Kallman, took a much deserved minute to rest.

Talent Caldwell, who is currently working with Wildstorm on Wildcats Nemesis, relaxed in the hotel lobby after a long day at the convention.

Freelance artist Tara McPherson, who is known in the comic community for her DC cover art, was hard at work sketching throughout the weekend.

Strangers in Paradise creator, Terry Moore, showed his love for PVP by keeping Skull close to him!

Horror legend, Bernie Wrightson, was packed up and ready to call it a night after an exhausting day in San Diego.

Artist and creator of Shiver in the Dark, Stuart Sayger, finally invested in a cell phone. Stop by his new message board to find out more about his current projects.

"Good girl" artist, Adam Hughes, was kept as busy as ever by his adoring fans.

Dracula Vs King Arthur co-creator, Adam Beranek, is always down for having a good time after a hard day of networking and selling and San Deigo was no exception.

Artist Alberto Ruiz showed off his newest sketchbook.

Andrew Bawidanmann, a pin-up artist who has been receiving a lot of attention recently, cuddled with his girlfriend at his table.

For painter, musician, and all-around sweetheart, Andy Lee, cleaning up after the convention is always a daunting task.

Spawn artist, Angel Medina spent the weekend immersed in sketches.

Even vetern illustrators like Monte Moore admit that they have to look up to Chris Moreno.

Jeff and Mandy Amano along with David Mack do their rendition of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".

Batman and Toe Tags artist, Tommy Castillo, shakes hands with his newest project, Evil Ernie.
