Did fear of science-fiction kill Meet Dave?

Posted by: Rich Watson on July 15, 2008 at 4:57 pm

“You may have thought Meet Dave bombed because it’s the latest in a long string of unfunny Eddie Murphy movies… but it turns out there’s another reason. The movie bombed, at least in part, because Fox refused to market it as science fiction, believing that nobody likes SF, and especially not SF comedies. Whether or not you care what happens to the bland Dave, the explanation of why Fox buried it, in the L.A. Times, should concern you.”

I could understand of Tom Rothman’s rationale was based on the performance(or lack there of) of Eddie Murphy’s last sci-fi comedy, but if it’s because he honestly believes there’s never been a successful sci-fi film, I have to start questioning not only this man’s intelligence and observational skills, but his rights as a human being!!!

You know why Will Smith is the most commercially successful film star in recent memory? Because he acknowledged that some of the most commercially successful films of all-time ARE sci-fi movies!!! I swear, if there’s any movie studio that succeeds in spite of itself more than any other studio, it’s 20th Century Fox.
