Wednesday Comics Unfolds in USA Today, Stores

Posted by: Jon Haehnle on July 8, 2009 at 10:59 am

DC’s latest weekly comic hits stores today, but with a big twist:

Reinventing the classic weekly newspaper comics section, it is a 16-page weekly that unfolds to a sprawling 28″ x 20″ tabloid-sized reading experience bursting with mind-blowing color, action and excitement, with each feature on its own 14″ x 20″ page.

We hope you’ll agree that it’s actually surprisingly refreshing to unfold and flip through, and the stories are fun as well.

Wednesday Comics is the brainchild of DC’s design mastermind Mark Chiarello (also responsible for the awesome Solo series, RIP). In addition to the novelty of the format itself, Chiarello has lined up some awesome talent. Like DC’s Source blog said, “Who can resist a weekly series that features the talents of Neil Gaiman, Brian Azzarello, Mike Allred, Karl Kerschl, Joe Kubert, Walt Simonson, Dave Gibbons, Kyle Baker, Kurt Busiek, Amanda Connor…to name a few?”

DC seems to have generated a good buzz for this launch, which is normally Marvel’s forte. In addition to lining up the usual suspects for online interviews and reviews, USA TODAY is apparently running the first installment of John Arcudi & Lee Bermejo’s SUPERMAN, both online and (the part that impressed me) in today’s print edition. That is pretty cool news! Bravo, DC.

You can check out the online Superman strip at USAToday.com.

Other featured characters include: Batman, Adam Strange, Metamorpho, The Demon and Catwoman, Deadman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Supergirl
Hawkman, The Flash, Metal Men and more!

Wednesday Comics costs $3.99 and hits stores today.
