Neglected to talk about the Black Ink panel at the CCC. It was me, Axel Alonso and DC’s Eddie Berganza, who is of Guatemalan descent (which I did not know). Axel and Eddie did most of the talking, which was fine by me. I felt a bit like I was sneaking into a private club, since Axel and Eddie already knew each other, plus they had brought friends. I got along with them fine, though.
I talked mostly about the GCAs and about independent comics, while Axel and Eddie waved the flags for their respective companies with regard to minority comics and characters. The audience started small but filled up quickly, and they definitely made it into a back-and-forth; it wasn’t just the three of us sitting up on stage yammering. And I think they came away having benefited from the experience. I made sure to plug both UVC and ECBACC (at least one guy was very interested about ECBACC). It went well.
A bit of news out of Wizard World LA: you already know about Dwayne McDuffie’s new Avengers title. DC announced that John Henry Irons would star in a new Infinity Inc. book by Peter Milligan, who’s one of my all-time favorite writers – at least, when he does Vertigo stuff, anyway. The only superhero work of his I care for is X-Force/X-Statix, but we’ll see how this one works out.
This guy wrote a piece in the Toronto Star about black superheroes, but it was heavily edited. So he decided to post the original version on his blog. The link is to the unedited version. (I found this on my own, but Pam was nice enough to send me the link, so thanks to her for doing so.)
Mama’s Boyz creator Jerry Craft talks about the superheroes of his youth.
