Comics for January 4 and news

Posted by: Rich Watson on January 1, 2007 at 4:47 pm

Happy new year! Once again, this week’s comics could come out on time (the 3rd), but maybe not because of the holiday, so check your local retailer…

Scarface: Scarred for Life #1

A new Scarface comic book based on the Brian De Palma film, illustrated by Dave Crosland.

Also this week:
Perhapanauts: Second Chances #3 (of 4)
Ant #9
Spawn Collection V1 TP
Iron Man: Armor Wars TP. Art by Mark Bright.
Gold Digger #80, GD: Tangent #2 (of 4), GD: Throne of Shadows 4-pack. Story and art by Fred Perry.
Internal Fury #1-4

So I saw Children of Men last night – liked it. The trailer gave away all the important bits, and I was almost gonna pass on this as a result, but when I saw all the good reviews it was getting, I figured what the heck. (I was pretty shocked, however, when a major character got killed off early.) I could see this getting a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination at the very least.

(And speaking of Oscar contenders, just to go off-topic for a second: if you haven’t seen Dreamgirls yet, well, what are you waiting for? Terrific stuff – and yeah, Jennifer Hudson probably will win Supporting Actress. How on earth did she possibly lose on American Idol, anyway?)

Have you heard? Disney’s next animated feature will feature black characters. It’s called The Frog Princess, and it’s set in 1920’s New Orleans. This casting call posting should give you a good idea about the types of characters that’ll be in it. (Scroll down about two-thirds of the way.)

A reminder: the deadline for submitting work for the 2007 Glyph Comics Awards is the 15th of this month. So there’s still time. E-mail me at rich.watson@gmail.com for details. We’ll announce this year’s nominees next month.

Finally, check out this e-mail I received this very morning from Kevin Grevioux:

Rich,

Just wanted to wish you a Happy New Year! Also, the book I’ll be doing for Marvel is the New Warriors. I’ll keep you informed.

Take care,
KG

I don’t think it’s any big surprise that Marvel’s bringing the New Warriors back in some form – they’ve always had a strong following, though I imagine this might be a brand new lineup – but having Kevin Grevioux, Underworld co-creator and actor as well as creator of a bunch of new comics in ‘06, writing the title definitely is unexpected. Congrats to him and I expect we’ll learn much more in the months to come.
