One final bit of news from the New York Comic-Con: From the Vertigo Crime panel: Gary Phillips will write a graphic novel called Cowboys (with the sublime Brian Hurtt drawing) inspired by the shooting of Sean Bell by New York City police officers in 2006: “A white FBI agent and a black LAPD cop each go undercover, with the black officer as a record exec, while the white guy ‘has a street thing.’ The opening has each pointing a gun at each other, a cut to the outdoors and a shot fired, and the story will explore how people can’t see past own preconceived notions. [Editor Will] Dennis added that it has a? ‘police drama show to it.’” (N’rama)

In other news: Tyler Perry talks Star Trek.

The film version of Kevin Grevioux’ comic ZMD has screenwriters.

Next Monday the 2009 Glyph Comics Awards nominees will be announced, and while I don’t know who they’ll be yet, I thought I’d share with you what the nominees for the Fan Award will be. This is the award that you get to vote on, and the ballot will be available at the website for the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention, where the awards take place. A reminder: write-in candidates are ONLY for nominees not on the ballot! We’ve had a problem with this the past couple of years, and this year I want to make it crystal clear: write-in ballots that have one of the nominees already on the ballot will not be counted and will be discarded! Got that?

So anyway, these will be the nominees:

Iron Man: Director of SHIELD #33-35

Pilot Season: Genius

Presidential Material: Barack Obama

Vixen: Return of the Lion

Young Avengers Presents #1

Remember, the online ballot goes up next week.
