I realize things have been a bit quiet on the ComicRankings front, but rest assured I’m working on it behind the scenes. There are currently over 7500 reviews in the CR database, and you can now view breakdowns by week, as below. But before you jump into a table of stats, let’s attempt to season this with a little commentary:
GRAND FINALES
Gerard Way’s highly acclaimed Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite wraps up this week with issue #6 — and when I say highly, I mean 6 issues (32 reviews) with an average score of 93%. IGN spoke for just about everyone saying, “Umbrella Academy has been nothing short of brilliant for nearly its entire run… With issue #6, the miniseries finishes off just as gloriously twisted as it started.”
Also exiting stage left this week is Cable/Deadpool, which essentially turned into Deadpool Team-Up following Cable’s involvement with Messiah Complex. “The series’ final bow is so laugh out loud funny, thrilling, and actually touching, that it’s sad to think that not enough people picked up this book,” said Comics Bulletin of issue #50, which averaged a 95%.
Meanwhile over in Wolverine: Origins, Deadpool’s been playing Wiley Coyote to Wolvie’s Road Runner (or is that the other way around), leaving fans wondering why writer Daniel Way (no relation to Gerard) is slated to helm DP. Paul O’Brien sums it up at X-Axis: “Five issues of this extended fight scene is an unenticing prospect; an entire series by the same creative team is downright terrifying. Presumably Marvel see this as a step up for Deadpool, but for the life of me, I can’t understand why.” Can he get an Amen?
DEBUTS
Dynamite’s Zorro enters to a mixture of good/average reviews (73.7 on 6 reviews), although Rack Raids begs to differ: “It’s hard to tell whether Wagner simply has too much respect for the character and is afraid to experiment, or if he’s just phoning it in for a pay-check, but either way the result is incredibly disappointing.”
Virgin’s Jenna Jameson Shadow Hunter surprises everyone by not being terrible, though that doesn’t mean they’re loving it. An average of 56.4 on only 5 reviews — you’d think having the biggest name in porn would generate more attention. After all, Dan Dare #1 had almost twice as many reviews.
PURE COMEDY GOLD
Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t have bring up Ultimates 3 #3, which scored 47.9 on 8 reviews (tied for the most-reviewed book of the week). At the risk of some undeniable bias, my favorite review was by PopCultureShock’s Jason Michelitch, who proclaimed the series the new All-Star Batman. “I’m actually finding it difficult to not be charmed by Ultimates 3. It’s so loud and slapdash that it’s like reading a comic written by a focus group of caffeinated eight-year olds. If you’re looking for any kind of intelligently written story, or even a bad story with a knowing wink, look elsewhere. But if you want to get a solid laugh out of an unapologetically ridiculous comic that has no idea just how bad it is, you really couldn’t do any better than this dumb, manic book.” You can read Jason’s whole review here.
