The tagline lets us believe this will be “The Untold Story” and we can only speculate as to what that entails, but excitement builds nonetheless.

The film is creeping out of dark corners and into theaters on July 3, 2012 and stars Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field.

Card Project Called ‘The Avengers: Kree-Skrull War’

July Trading Card Release Will Reveal Five Untold Tales!

press release

The Upper Deck Company, in conjunction with Marvel Entertainment, Inc., is announcing plans to produce and distribute a very unique trading card project called “The Avengers: Kree-Skrull War.” Resurrecting a previously published story arc around popular Marvel characters including Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and Vision, the 190-card set will boast one original main story and four original side stories that will share with Marvel fans untold tales from the Kree-Skrull War.
In the early ‘70s, the Marvel Universe released a story arc of nine original comics called “The Avengers” (issues 89 through 97) that followed The Avengers in their daily struggles to safeguard the world against any threat beyond the power that conventional peacekeeping forces could handle. Now Upper Deck is reintroducing some of those characters with an all-new story line complete with original artwork that will be delivered via trading cards. The main story, entitled “Sacrifice” and featuring Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and Vision, will consist of 20 pages that will take Marvel fans and collectors on a unique journey authored by renowned comic book writer Sean McKeever. Story pages turn front to back just like a standard comic book and will consist of nine cards per page. In addition to the riveting main story, four side stories will be launched simultaneously within the same set. Eager fans can read an eight-page story titled “The Debt,” following Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch; an intense six-page story called “The Fall,” following Nick Fury; and two four-page stories titled “Power” and “Soldiers’ Honor” featuring Super-Skrull and Captain America, respectively.

“This is truly a unique comic book story from Upper Deck,” said Bubby Johanson, Upper Deck’s product manager for Marvel. “Never before has a trading card company produced a unique Marvel comic book story line that is delivered via trading cards. Collectors can seek out the entire set and literally put together the comic book pages, including the cover, to capture a very cool collectible.”

Hey gang! My first full-length comic book, Thor and the Warriors Four, kicks off with issue #1 this Wednesday, April 7th.

I thought it would be fun, to help get the word out, to have you guys take pictures of yourselves after you got the issue, either at home, in the store, or somewhere else more creative, and you can e-mail ‘em to me, or tweet them at me, and I’ll post them either here on the blog, or re-tweet ‘em on Twitter (or both).

And you don’t have to just buy them… If you’re a retailer, or work at a comic shop, take a picture of it on the wall (hey, if it’s next to some sort of “Pick of the Week” sign, I won’t stop you), and I’ll plug the heck out of your shop.

And of course, let me know what you liked – and didn’t like – about the comic! Yay!

You can tweet @comicbooklive or @azalben.

You can e-mail comicbookclublive@gmail.com.

Check it out on Marvel.com.

TV fans might be seeing double if they consume a little too much genre fare, as actor Mark Pellegrino is playing crucial roles on the current seasons of both Lost and Supernatural. We decided to break it down and see just how different Jacob and Satan really are. From the handy spreadsheet we’ve created below, you can see that maybe they have more in common than one Mark Pellegrino. In fact, if you read between the lines, perhaps a massive Lost/Supernatural crossover is almost upon us, with the Winchester boys hitting the Island to kick Smocke’s sorry butt back to the Temple. I am pretty sure that every culture has a legend about a smoke monster…

Vampires and cylons might not age, but actors do. Here's five case studies TV producers should look at when casting their "immortals."

There’s a little problem with building your TV show around a character who will never age: actors, in real life, get older. Don’t know if you knew that, but it’s true. Clearly, TV producers don’t know that, because time and again, they cast actors as immortal characters and then five seasons later, have to come up with increasingly convoluted explanations why their supposedly forever perfect character is suddenly three hundred pounds and wrinkly.

Take, for example, Zoe Graystone on Caprica; or rather, Zoe’s computerized clone, who will live forever as a memory of Eric Stoltz’s dead daughter only in computer code.

Sure the actress, Alessandra Torresani, is only 22 now (and playing a high schooler), so chances are that even if Caprica ends up trumping it’ parent show Battlestar Galactica and runs for six seasons, we won’t have to deal with an episode where Stoltz programs wrinkles and gray hair into his daughter’s avatar. But if I was a betting man (which I bet you I’m not), I’d say that Zoe Graystone in the Caprica pilot, and Zoe Graystone’s avatar whenever the show ends are gonna be a leeeeetle bit different.

Maybe the writers of Caprica should take a page from other immortal TV characters’ books and see how they did (or didn’t) handle their actor’s “growth:”

The long suffering neighbor and our favorite New Jerseyite comments on his co-stars, the joys of yelling at professional atheletes and finally having his moment as DVD coverboy!

It’s a moment ten years in the making but finally, Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s portly, hairy curmudgeon Carl Brutananadilewski has been given a chance to shine, or at least his gold chain has. We’re thrilled to exclusively debut the box art for Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volume 7, which you can check out below. We also got a rare opportunity to interview the Aqua Teen’s good neighbor (with a little help from ATHF co-creator Dave Willis) on finally getting his due, his thoughts on his co-stars and living like a pimp, New Jersey style.

UGO: Hey Carl, how’s it going?

Carl Brutananadilewski: Pretty good! I got this Chinese energy drink in the mail a couple days ago. I Googled it and they say it’s rattlesnake penis mixed with battery acid. I respect the Chinese for not being afraid to thin out the herd a little, even if it costs me a gall bladder.

Given that the current season of Supernatural has the Winchester Boys facing down the Apocalypse, the culmination of every single storyline that’s played out through five seasons of the show, it’s a little surprising to hear creator Eric Kripke is reportedly “warming” to the idea of a sixth season. This is according to no less than Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment at The CW, who revealed this tidbit at the show’s 100th Episode Party.

And while it would be nice for Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles to have one more year before they slowly fade onto the sci-fi convention autograph circuit, there’s really no reason to continue the show beyond the five years that were originally planned. There’s really only a few of options for a sixth season:

Of all the unexplainable things on Dharma Island – polar bears, smoke monsters, Nikki and Paulo – nothing has been quite as jarring as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney (aka, Mac), showing up this week as petulant Other, Aldo.

Okay, to be fair, as Aldo pointed out, he had shown up once before: getting conked on the head by Kate and Sawyer as they tried to escape The Others in season three’s Juliet-centric “Not in Portland.” But it didn’t make the elongated appearance any less weird, and true to LOST style, raised more questions than it answered:

- Why was Mac’s beard so patchy?
- What happened to his muscle shirts?
- Does Paddy’s Pub play a crucial part in LOST mythology?

People say funny things on TV all the time. What if we took that stuff and put it on a t-shirt? That’s a multi-millionaire dollar industry right there. We’d be Shamow and Snuggie-rich! So, let’s fire up the ole’ silkscreen machine in the basement we used to print our crappy band’s t-shirts with and make something worth wearing!
The motto of Smallville is famously “No flights, no tights,” but they never said anything about a t-shirt. In fact, Kal-El, last son of Krypton has been sporting a silver spray painted Superman logo on a black T for the entirety of the ninth season. The episode where he went down to the local tourist trap and picked it up was not to be missed, by the way. And while he was there, maybe Supes should have considered picking up a shirt with one of these catchphrases from Smallville‘s past:

Is this the fourth Avengers title?

We know it’s coming. Before their “cancellation,” there were four Avengers books: Mighty, New, Dark, and The Initiative. So far, Marvel announced three successors to the books that’ll start up post Siege: Avengers Academy, which essentially replaces Initiative; Secret Avengers; and plain old The Avengers, which is the flagship title by Brian M. Bendis and John Romita Jr.

Chances are, there’s one more title in the offing, and as I was thinking about it, Marvel has clearly been trying to build the announcements to a fever pitch… Starting with the expected The Avengers relaunch featuring Iron Man, Cap, and Thor (as well as a few others), building with the intriguing blobs of Secret Avengers, and, I’m guessing, kicking off on Monday with the reveal of the last title (unless they decide to mainstream tease Avengers Academy).

So what title could possibly freak people out, get fans in a frenzy, and excite the base in such a way that it would top the previous two titles? Which title would fit into the new happy go lucky days of The Heroic Age? I think I’ve figured it out, and for your benefit, created a template you can use to make your own “I am an Avenger…” promo for next week. You’re welcome:

So what do you think? Am I right on the money? Or off my rocker?

What we think of Secret Asian Man, The Daily Days

This collection of daily Comic strips is amazing on different levels. First of all it is freaking hilarious. Secondly it is great example of how to write a comic strip. The strip pushes the boundaries of race as well as the boundaries of writing a comic strip.

This giant book is full of the funny. I think my favorite strip (spoiler alert) is the one with Secret Asian Man or Sam and his son Shin, who is playing with dogs. Shin is saying arf at the dogs and the dogs are looking at him funny and then say why does that kid keep saying mayonnaise? So Funny! This is just a taste of the goodness that lies inside this book.

As for the boundaries of the strip itself, Shin is playing with a friend and he throws a plane off the panel and it lands in the next one. His friend tries but his plane bounces off the side of the panel. Shin comments, it only works if the story line continues. So great! The characters are so real and the writing does a great job of being light and funny at times and seriously funny the rest of the time. Another strip is a race card on vacation. Good times! Whether the strip is dealing with thirsty gnomes, wookies, Satan’s puppy, or towel bags. Its humor is coming from an honest place. This is one creative, fun, and cool look at friends and family with a dash of pop culture. If you have a sense of humor you will love this comic! It’s Chill-tastic! (You have to read the book)

Are these mini comics big on value?

We’ve been talking a lot lately about how much comics cost, and alternate ways of writing and marketing comic book stories in the current economic climate. In jumps Silber Mini Comics, postage stamp sized books by writer Brian John Mitchell that have one panel per tiny page, printed on regular paper, and sold for a dollar each. Are they worth it at any price? Is this the wave of the future, or a relic of the past?

To get a sense of what this means, I decided to do mini reviews of Silber Mini Comics. Pretty clever, I know, I’m amazing:

XO #5: Most adorable little crime comic ever? It may be the size, but this was like if Bazooka Joe decided to try crack one day.

WORMS #4 & #5: The Prisoner, by any other name, but also a good, dream-like use of the Mini Comic format.

JUST A MAN #1, #2 & #3: What if you took every Clint Eastwood Western and made them into a tiny comic? But what if we could?

MARKED #1: The phrase, “They’ll be back in in two nights. I can smell their plans,” should let you know whether you’re interested in this or not.

LOST KISSES #9, #10 & #11: The first two issues are blog posts in comic form. Issue #11 is the most focused story of this whole bunch of comics… With art by Cerebus’ Dave Sim.

On a whole, the books aren’t breaking any new ground, and with the exception of Lost Kisses #11, they lack a certain clarity of focus to the story, aping other people’s ideas rather than creating their own. Also, only occasionally does Mitchell really make the format work for him, as it does in Worms (each page is like a deepening nightmare).

However! Since this does sometimes work, Mitchell, with the help of a good editor (or a little self editing) could really focus on a unique idea that works specifically with this format, and be on to something. Or, bring on other writers and artists (as he does with the Dave Sim issue), and let them play, working instead as a publishing house. Either way, $1 is a bargain in this economy, and Mitchell, with a little perseverance and smart choices, could really build Silber Mini Comics into something interesting.

As it is, they’re an interesting glimpse at one possibility for the printed pamphlet’s future.
