college paper riled over Knight cartoon

Keith Knight’s cartoon

The paper’s reaction

I thought it was funny, but I can see why people would get a little bent out of shape about it. Maybe they should ask themselves why it gets them upset.

Also: Here’s a report on the recent lecture about the Sam Milai exhibit at the Cartoon Research Library here in Columbus.

Hmm…. this is interesting. The kind of contradiction that Knight satirizes has been the media’s favorite topic recently (take for instance: http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1008/A_sign_in_Licking.html?showall). So I wonder if the issue is the use of the slur? or the slur being directed at Obama? or being used by an Obama supporter? I think this editorial strip effectively captures – through both shock and humor – a transformational moment in our politics and our society. Clearly, this country still has a long way to go when it comes to race relations. But the fact that it manages to be oddly disturbing and just a tiniest bit encouraging is part of why it works.

As a side note: maybe this controversy will give Keith Knight some national attention!
