File this under “Idle Speculation,” but we haven’t heard a peep about Marvel’s next big Summer event, and a number of clues started jumping out at me:
1. Captain America (Steve Rogers Cap, I mean) will be finished with being Reborn in November, barring schedule delays.
2. The last known solicits for Dark Reign titles are in October (though, to be fair, solicits for October aren’t out yet).
3. If you look at a rough pattern of crossovers (this is probably the sketchiest clue possible), you have Bendis (House of M), Millar (Civil War), Pak (World War Hulk), Bendis (Secret Invasion), and then… Nothing. Marvel has stated they are in the event business, yet no announcement for the next big event?
4. Millar definitely has projects in the works for Marvel, though none they “could” announce yet.
5. With Dark Reign: The List hitting in September, the stage is being set for Norman Osborn to take the fight to the heroes. Right before Steve comes back. Heroes brought to their lowest point, when a leader finally returns? Smells like a set-up to me.
So what does this all mean? Absolutely nothing. But wouldn’t it be satisfying to bookend the events of the past few years in the Marvel Universe by having Mark Millar write Marvel’s next big event, Civil War 2? Civil War got huge press, good sales, and with some exceptions, good critical word. You have a nice parallel to the last event, where Cap “lost.” And this time, he’s fighting an Iron Man (Normie in Iron Patriot armor) who is clearly on the side of wrong.
Hey, I could be wrong. But I could be right, too, and then you would all owe me money for some reason.
Think I’m totally off base? Or totally on base? Talk back in the comments…

Actually, “Civil War 2″ will fit in this decade events for Marvel. Logic suggests that there will be a huge revolt against Osborn; why not a War on Terror! However, Mark Millar? No, I thought Civil War was a badly written series, but I like the idea of Super Hero Registration,
I’d would rather have another writer than Bendis (one of my favor writers, but Bendis’ crossovers fatigue) and Millar (not a fan, Millar is the Micheal Bay of the Comic book World). Probably a team of writers would be sufficient for this end of decade event!
Anybody think that Fraction could get a shot at the big time, it feels like Marvel has been grooming him for a while and has finally started handing him elite titles after having him earn his keep with B listers (P:WZ, Iron Fist, whatever that california initiative team was) I think he has great broad ideas, maybe if you partnered him up with someone for dialogging – like bendis or hickman, you could have a pretty nice set up.
And if you had a fraction/hickman team you could potentially bring either the x-men or the fantastic four back to the mainstage of the marvel U that is currently dominated by the various avengers and spidey.
@Mario –
Maybe, if Marvel wants to make headline with the media, how about a World War with United States, China, Lavertia, Wankada, Madripoor, and Russia. In addition, I agree with Fraction taking over some of the higher titles at Marvel.
I love the idea of a Fraction/Hickman team-up for Marvel’s next big event… Who would you want on art?
@Alex –
Potential artist: John Cassaday, Stefano Caselli, John Romita Jr., or Clay Mann?
Even more fuel: Mark Millar has an unannounced Marvel project with Steve McNiven!
I don’t think it’ll be Civil War 2, though – he’s said he’s only interested in “the Stan ‘n’ Jack stuff” nowadays, and while that doesn’t preclude a big summer crossover per se, my money’s on Thor.
But thematically I think you’re on the money with where the Marvel Universe story is going. I see a big Avengers reunion for Cap, Iron Man and Thor, and you’ll end up with those three on the flagship Avengers title, all above-ground and officially-endorsed etc.
One other thought… What if they pull the rug out from under us, and just when it seems like Cap is going to lead the charge to beat Normie… Things get worse?
I don’t know, that’d be how many down-endings in a row for Marvel Events? To paraphrase both Daredevil AND Goliath in Civil War #1, it could be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Couldn’t guess. Marvel is doing some crazy ideas. Feels like random characters and events are drawn from seperate hats. I imagine they’ll roll with that again. Good example would be Brother Voodoo as sorcerer supreme. But you gotta give’em credit, that’s completely criminal. Personally, I think Cloak and Dagger needs a reboot… big fan of Cloak over here.
Not a reboot, but I’ll take it! Looks like Cloak and Dagger just became “X-Men”. *warm and fuzzy*
this was my assumption until jms quit thor because of a crossover he referred to as ‘siege of asgard’. that could just be a tie in to CW2, but has the potential to be the summer event itself. also, undoing the effects of civil war would mean cancelling a whole bunch of ongoing avengers titles that are selling at $3.99…
I thought there was hints at the next ‘event’ being magic based? well thats my bet anyway
and also im betting that there will be an Invaders series possibly coming out of an event or part of an event, due to Human Torch is coming back, Cap is back, Bucky is back…
