Can Obama be drawn better?

“It’s been a long, sometimes daunting road to Obama’s presidential victory. Artistic mistakes were made along the way, and occasionally, some cartoonists did not display the necessary vision. But those mistakes are in the past — it’s a brand new day, and a time for a fresh aesthetic beginning.
“So with that in mind, consider this a call to arms, if not drawing hands. Comic Riffs beseeches the nation’s cartoonists with one simple request — a call to excellence, if you will: Draw an even better Obama.”

Great link on the Chicago Defender cartoons. (How do you find this stuff!) And yes, cartoonist do need to figure out how to draw a better Obama. As an aside, I was surprisingly pleased with the way the South Park folks illustrated Obama in this week’s hilarious episode…

Speaking as an artist, I do think Obama presents a bit of a challenge: there’s very little about his face that can be exaggerated or emphasized effectively. His ears are a bit wide (though one has to be careful not to make him look like Will Smith), and he’s got a somewhat sharp and angular chin, but that’s about it. He doesn’t have a distinctive hairdo like Sarah Palin, he’s not really old like John McCain, he’s not fat and he doesn’t wear glasses. If it were up to me I might be inclined to just use his sunrise icon as a stand-in!
