Can Jay-Z Kill Auto-Tune?

A lot has been said about Jay-Z’s “D.O.A.” (Death Of Auto-Tune). While there are plenty of fans that have been calling for the demise of auto-tune, several artists have spoken out against Jay. Even Mary J. Blige is planning of using it. It would seem that Jay-Z’s efforts may only strengthen the resolve of those who have used, and intend to continue using it. To say nothing of artists recording diss tracks, and calling for Jay-Z to retire. It all seems rather extreme in some cases, but after really thinking about it, I’m not sure if this whole thing was the smartest move for Jay-Z to make. I definitely share in his sentiment to an extent, but Jay seems to have neglected one of the fundamentals of popular music. . . .trends eventually die on their own. Rarely does a single artist prove effective in actively killing a trend. What we usually have is a situation not unlike nature, evolution, Darwin, bitches! Eventually, a larger trend will catch on, and auto-tune will simply fade away. Of course, you’ll have that one big artist that jumps on the auto-tune bandwagon far too late, and proceeds to carry it around like Andrew McCarthy and John Silverman’s dead boss in Weekend At Bernies, trying to convince us all that it’s still alive and well (Prediction: Diddy).
