British group calls Tintin comic racist

Posted by: Rich Watson on July 14, 2007 at 3:37 am

We all know Tintin, right? Classic European comic, internationally known and loved, about to be made into a movie by Spielberg? Apparently one of the Tintin graphic novels, set in Africa, has come under fire by a British watchdog group who claims it contains racist depictions of Africans.

Something about this makes me want to call shenanigans on it, though. Tintin in the Congo was published in the 1930s. Tintin is one of the most popular comics characters of all time, especially in Europe. And Europe’s not like America; they treat comics seriously, with respect, over there. And it took a single Borders customer for this CRE group to suddenly discover it and declare it racist?

Regardless, I have a problem with somebody telling someone else what they can and can’t sell in their own stores. That’s just not right.
