Is Tim Gunn Gonna Have To Choke A B*tch?!?

By: Jon Haehnle

I wish I could say I was the one who yelled, “Is Tim Gunn Gonna Have To Choke A B*tch?!?” but credit where credit’s due it was Dylan. Still, as badly we wished for Kenley’s so well-deserved comeuppance, it has yet to come, and perhaps never will… Tim Gunn, in addition to his many other classy attributes, apparently has the patience of a saint as well. Not too surprising, but I can’t believe she never got the Heidi Klum smackdown she was begging for either.

While this season of Project Runway clearly had any number of people to hate on (Kenley!!! Keith!! Daniel!) it lacked any easy or early favorites. This isn’t a problem limited to PR of course. Lately I find myself watching shows and half the season will go by without me even knowing or fully caring who everyone is, and maybe by the time there’s half a dozen contestants I’ll hopefully have someone to root for.

Early on I picked Korto as someone I might like to win, and even now I want her to. I think the only thing I ever really disliked about her were her horrid pants with fins. However, Korto never made me love her the way Jerrell did. I admit in the beginning I dismissed him as a wannabe snarker, and was probably too busy hoping for Terri to make it to appreciate him. But Jerrell grew on me and more and more I found myself looking forward to his quips, quirks and… even his baffling array of “Men On Film”-worthy hats.

With only four contestants left I think the whole world was probably hoping Kenley would go home, but in hindsight it should have been a no-brainer to guess that the producers would keep all four around for one more episode.

But something strange happened for me after the designers went home. After seeing everybody’s collections, I suddenly realized that Jerrell had probably gone as far as he was going to go, or deserved to go really. This wasn’t exactly like Season 3, when we all loved Michael Knight above everyone else all season long, only to have him come back with a disappointing collection. That was kind of crushing. With Jerrell I somehow wasn’t surprised that his collection was a mess. (After all, the judges — or should I say editors — had foreshadowed it often enough). I felt it was over for Jerrell, as it should be, and the final bride/bridesmaid challenge didn’t change my mind, or the judges it seems.

So, in the end I’m rooting for Korto, or Leanne. And that’s fine. I’ll be holding my breath along with the rest of the viewing public as we all think the same thing: “Please god, anyone but Kenley…”

I’m with you, J. Kenley acts as if you don’t run into the same people in an industry like this. In fact she’ll keep bumping into these people.

Normally in the home visits you see some wow factor and Jerrell didn’t have that. Same with Korto and I loved her early season work. I’m eager to see Leanne’s collection as a whole, but like you as long as Kenley doesn’t take it home.

But give her credit, she deserved the kudos on the wedding dress. Korto’s was a mess and Jerrell’s bottom half was damn good, but the bust up was a mess.

Korto’s story would be great, I hope she’s got more rabbits left in that hat…

@Ernie Estrella - I was a bit worried for Korto with her wedding & bridesmaid dresses but she made it through, so that’s what matters.

I think I liked what I saw of Korto’s collection more than you did because I thought it was looking promising. I always believed Korto would have a good collection, and I even thought Kenley would at least have a vision to build around — but Leanne (and Jerrell) I wasn’t sure about. Happily, Leanne came through :) I do like her — and not just in a “anybody but Kenley” way. She just hasn’t given me as much reason to have confidence in her as Korto has til now.

Kenley’s wedding dress looked great (her model had a huge smile on her face) but it kind of disturbed me that Michael Kors basically said she ripped off Alexander McQueen. Not that I know what he’s talking about, but I don’t think he’d mention that if there wasn’t some basis for it.

But back to her attitude — she really needs a big smack upside the head :( The big problem is that she doesn’t understand that *she* is the problem. She always feels like it’s her versus the world, and completely fails to recognize the reason she always feels left out or hated on is that she causes it and everybody around her is just reacting to her.

Kenley’s got TO syndrome. And yeah she doesn’t take criticism well, and up until last week she’s been a one-trick pony. She’s “print girl” I think I know what Kors was talking about because when I saw the dress, as well put together as it was, the feathers/fur area looked really familiar. The bottom of it looked like a ballet dress. But it looked great on the model. All of these Bravo shows are about taking the criticism and making a weakness into a strength, the good ones understand. It’s like any design class/competition, some people don’t get it.

Leanne’s flown under the radar but the last couple of weeks has done good work. Her standout dress was that thing she made in the automobile challenge. The season’s had more lows than highs mostly because of that spaced out guy with the dopey surfer look, and the leather & grommet geriatric chick. Their names escape me…

Kenley does seem to be a one-trick pony, but then again I think a lot of people are. Remember Uli from Season 2? She did the same thing over and over but I still liked her and her stuff. I could probably name more people that fall into that category. It just happens that Kenley is the most thoroughly hated one-trick pony.

I didn’t get into Leanne’s car dress. Neither did Dylan but he correctly predicted the judges would love it.

This season seemed to have a high number of people who sucked but were likable. Like Suede. And Blaine (”-licious”) and Stella (”leatha”)… I kept thinking Stella would get a challenge up her alley and make something cool, but it never happened. Meanwhile I kept waiting for Blaine to get eliminated and get off my tv, and then the same thing with Suede.

Yes Blaine-liciious and Stella… I couldn’t imagine Stella pounding out all those grommet holes. I just don’t think she every understood the challenge part of the competition. She just made clothes she wanted to make. Blaine… well that bastard was just out there. Speaking of annoying MFers, Wisit from Top Design needs to be drug out back and shot.

Anyway, I really dug Uli’s collection, especially her show at Bryant Park. And the One-trick ponies are acceptable as long as they keep adding new twists. Jennifer (Frumpy sweater outfits), and Terri (women’s pants) just ran out of challenges where their one-trick could save them. Daniel and Keith never understood the challenges, and what about Keith crying like a bitch and being rattled after the criticism he got.

IT’s always interesting to see what these folks can do when there’s not a challenge involved. Some of them use that to confine them where as others rise above it to use it as a guiding force to create something original. I feel this way too when I watch Top Chef. I’d just love to see Korto really pull out some of what we saw earlier in the season and something we never saw before like Jillian last season. She’s got the most potential for that POW in her line, Leanne’s may look like an actual cohesive collection. Kenley, I have no idea what to expect… and that scares me.

Ok, I was pulling for Korto, but I’m cool with Leanne. And in fact, I didn’t hate Kenley as much. The thing that struck me most was when the judges asked why each of them should win — Korto and Kenley made emotional pleas and wanted it so bad while Leanne simply explained, pretty rationally, her merits. Not saying that’s why she won, it just seemed like a somewhat unemotional response compared to the other two. Not sure how much of that was confidence she was going to win? Anyway, good show. Hopefully they work out whatever legal problems are going on so next season isn’t delayed
