Still kinda salty that they’re not hitting DC on their U.S. Tour, though!
I’m not really what you’d call a die-hard Alicia Keys fan. Not that I think her music is bad, but she’s not really an artist I clamor for. I’ll listen to a song of hers if someone else plays it, or if it’s on the radio, but I don’t think I’ve ever cared to listen to any of her albums in their entirety. But if there’s one song of hers that’s turning out to be one of my favorites, it’s her latest single “Un-thinkable”. It has a great balance of emotion, sincerity, sensuality, and just does an overall superb job of eliciting the right kind of response from listeners. And thankfully there’s a nice video to go with it. Yeah, it would have been easy to set the whole tale of forbidden interracial love between Keys and Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill) exclusively during the peak of the civil rights era, and thus rather boring. The great thing about this video is how they track the progression of their romance through several decades, leading up to present day. It really strengthens the narrative, while matching the song perfectly. And on a completely frivolous note, it’s a kick to see the two leads in different hairstyles and wardrobe as the video progresses. Keys’ frizzy do, and Murray’s “good ol’ boy” mullet made for a nice moment of unintentional comedy during the 80′s portion!
It’s 90s Soul Sista Month here at My Future Ex-Wife Of The Week, and I’m kicking things off with Amel Larrieux. From Groove Theory, to working with Sweetback, and her solo work, I’ve always found her to be a great artist, not to mention being stunningly beautiful. I’m always gonna have a soft spot for “Tell Me”, especially, ’cause it reminds me of my high school days in Montreal, when I had to work to hear the only radio station playing hip-hop and R&B on a Walkman. I mean, laying on my bed sideways with my back arched, and one arm raised in the air, ’cause the frequency wasn’t strong enough to come through otherwise! K103, The Monster On The Seaway, dammit!!!
With all of the hype around what is sure to be one of the biggest movies of the year Iron Man 2, New Era Cap Co., Inc., the premiere, global headwear designer, developer and manufacturer is unveiling five new Iron Man 2 caps just in time for the theatrical release of the film.
Drawing inspiration from both the Iron Man and War Machine characters, New Era designed must-have caps for comic book fans and collectors alike, such as the iconic War Machine Character and Iron Man All Over caps.
The caps currently retail between $34.99 and $49.99, but Popcultureshock will be giving away caps to five lucky readers. Simply be one of the first five individuals to submit correct answers to the following trivia questions, and one of these caps can be yours.
1) In what comic did Iron Man first appear in?
2) While Jim Rhodes first appeared in Iron Man #118, when did he first appear as War Machine?
3) Mickey Rourke’s character in Iron Man 2 combines elements of Whiplash, and what other Iron Man villain?
4) Although originally Chinese, Yinsen is portrayed as Middle Eastern in the first Iron Man. Name the actor who portrayed him.
5) This popular hip-hop artist uses “Tony Starks” as an alias, and even named his first solo album “Ironman”.
6) In the cinematic Marvel Universe, what does S.H.I.E.L.D. stand for?
So I’ve decided things have been getting a little boring with this feature, and to be fair, I’ve never been terribly consistent in my posting every week, which I’m trying to change. I figured I’d try to shake things up, and part of that is to try out theme months, focusing on a specific group of ladies. So next week, May is gonna be 90s Soul Sistas Month. I know there are far too many of them to just pick four, but dammit if I’m not gonna try! I’m sure folks could come up with a minimum of four silky-voiced cuties that I’d catch hell for not including, but like I always say, if you don’t like my selections . . . that’s your problem.
But I do genuinely want to make things a little more inclusive for the readers, and hopefully make it a little more fun. So in June (and lasting until the end of the summer), We’re gonna start doing The Future Ex-Wife Showdown. On the Monday of every week, I’ll offer up two ladies for readers to vote on, with the winner being presented on the Friday of that week. You make the call, dammit! I won’t be held responsible!
I vaguely remember there being some talk about this young lady, especially with her catching the attention of Justin Timberlake. Getting past all of the goofy bastards YouTube continues to make famous, it’s nice when the sun shines on a dog’s ass from time to time, and graces us with some relatively talented individuals. The Dutch songstress’ debut single is pretty decent, tinged with 80s urban pop courtesy of The Malloys. Even the video’s nice, if not terribly groundbreaking. Although I feel like she’s trying to be a little too sexy. She’s a cute girl, but there’s cute, and then there’s sexy. I’d prefer she had actually lips, but she’s foreign, so I’ll forgive her!
Disclaimer: I did try to find out this model’s name, but to no avail. She will be referred to as such until someone informs me otherwise. (But I’ll probably refer to as such even after I know her real name!
Since Starting My Future Ex-Wife of the Week, I’ve had plenty of folks point out my selections being of a specific type. Some feel I don’t give the dark-skin honies enough love. Some say I only seem to like the boney chicks. And while I’ll be damned if I’m gonna waste a lot of time trying to justify my selections, I will say that I do love women in general, and every once in a while, I do like me a thick’ums! If anything, I think a few well-known thick’ums have gotten a lil’ too “light in the ass” so to speak!
In any event, I just heard about the so-called controversy sparked by the below commercial, and I’m wondering what the big deal is (no pun intended!). Lane Bryant claims both ABC and FOX banned the commercial, claiming it was too racy, or there was too much cleavage (an idea I find profoundly ludicrous), or whatever. Both networks fired back saying they never banned the commercial, but only asked that Lane Bryant agree to censor it. I’m wondering what needed to be censored! Victoria’s Secret commercials leave less to the imagination! And the people chiming in sound just as stupid. Some commenting the concept of the whole commercial is silly, ignoring the fact that we have lingerie commercials out there directed by Michael “SPLOSIONS!” Bay! Or you’ve got Kathie-Lee arguing that the commercial didn’t promote marital values. Didn’t your husband cheat on you? Yeah, you’re an excellent judge of character! Marital values have no business in a lingerie commercial! There’s nothing exclusively “marital” about the response a woman is trying to elicit when she wears lingerie!
Whatever. All I know is this lovely lady has been brought to my attention! So HOO-RAY!!
After a hard fought battle with cancer, rapper Guru, one half of the hip-hop duo Gangstarr, passed away yesterday at the age of 43. Guru’s health made news earlier this year when he suffered a cardiac arrest, and had been in a coma for some time.
In addition to six Gangstarr albums released between 1989 and 2003, the rapper also released four volumes of the Jazzmatazz series, collaborating with artists such as N’Dea Davenport, Branford Marsalis, and Roy Ayers.
Guru was well-respected in the hip-hop community at large and will be greatly missed.
Humor goes a long way when it comes to Ms. Right (Now) for me. Every man likes a girl that will laugh at his jokes, but I’m sure the inverse is true. So when I came across the comedy troupe Candy Slice’s rendition of Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad” Remix, I know I had fallen head over heels. Which is odd, ’cause I usually never truly find out until I’m head over heels! Adorably goofy stuff like this gets me every time.
