Bill Foster on Bill Foster

Posted by: Rich Watson on December 6, 2006 at 9:01 pm

“Sadly, even after appearing for 40 years in a number of Marvel titles (including his own shortlived five-issue series in 1976), this Goliath never really rose above the rank of second banana. Even as I congratulate Marvel for including Goliath in its roster of superheroes, they never really knew what to do with a 15-foot tall black guy. Even Bill Foster’s death in Civil War is disappointing, happening almost accidentally. He is killed by a clone of Thor, Norse god of thunder. Nevertheless, my—excuse me, Bill’s—untimely death was not as sad as it could have been.”

LOL! What are the odds?

But, what Mr. Foster says is so true. They tried to paint his death as really sad, affecting many superheroes in the Marvel Universe. But, the writing is so much about getting to the punchline, that you never really got the emotional sting of Goliath’s death and what it means.
