I found this story arch to be confusing. I think morrsion tried to be as good 'hush' series, I'm just not sure. The characters are not clear, the story line is not clear, and I'm not sure if batman alive or dead.
I hate when writers try to kill off popular characters...I suppose morrison is trying to say something about the idea of Batman never dying, but we all already knew that.

Try harder DC...please

Um, okay so it got me perhaps a teensie bit closer to actually having some sort of respect for the '90s Batman - you know - the angry/ twisted/ fighting tough to the point of NOT killing while at the same time NOT being a detective like back in the day?

But, COME ON PEOPLE!?! WHAT?!!? WHY ALL THE HYPE? WERE WE ALL DUPED? WHY?! Why did we let ourselves be so!? I do not think Morrison is the king of all kings of woven stories. The plot dug itself into a hole and now it has to dig itself out.

Have bigger holes been dug? OF COURSE! All comics do, have, and always will.

All I can say is that at least this is a new beginning of something - perhaps a new beginning to the OLD Batman, the back in the silver age or earlier, the one who really fought crime and had serious issues and did not deal with all these freaks...

And who kept the joker the joker. For, without Bruce, there is no Batman. Without Batman, there is no joker.

Now what?

Great review, BTW.

Feh.
Anyone who wants to use a simple 2-dimensional character such as BAtman to tell "deep" stories should study what Nolan accomplished with the movies, especially the second one. Metaphysical and Batman go together like peanut butter and sand.

This story was unbelievably boring and irritating. I thought they'd never top the low of Batman #665 (excuse me DC, but I thought I was paying for a comic book, not some hackneyed overblown attaempt at literature...with crappy illustrations), but I see I was wrong.

So I guess RIP is not actually over. Now that #682 is out, as part 1 of "Last Rites", Morisson is throwing even more things into the mix. A fake Alfred? Some guy that looks like clayface but may not be? wow.

ok, this story was horrible. I don't know why DC has someone like Morrison writing such a "big" story. He writes as if he wants you to be confused and under or over think what he's trying to get across. They need to have Geoff Johns come on batman and fix it just like he fixed green lantern, JSA, Teen Titans, and Flash...twice! (flash rebirth coming soon) Now Morrison has ruined Batman and is giving us a horrible follow up to John's Infinite Crisis with this shitty Final Crisis.

Great review, I agree with your theories about what Morrison was trying to say.

The ending was extremely disappointing based on all of the hype. I enjoyed the story, too, however.

The story echoes many of the themes from Nightfall. Dick Grayson assumed the mantle of Batman at some point years ago. I didn't like the story. Morrisson is always trying to do something extreme and twisted to well established characters. You mean to tell me we went through all those issues to see batman "die" in a helicopter explosion. I didn't like what Morrisson did to X-Men and I don't like what he did to Batman.
