Don’t Assume Nolan’s Guaranteed For Batman 3

According to MTV Splash Page, which got this bit from Batman-on-Film, award-winning director and re-inventor Christopher Nolan, might not sign in for Batman 3. This is, again, rumor. Reason? Nolan was deeply affected by the death of Heath Ledger. Stating that the death, “rocked Mr. Nolan hard”, it goes on to quote that, “['The Dark Knight'] was going to be it for him and Batman on film.”

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing another filmmaker take over. While I’m still weary given the fact that the third film of any comic movie franchise is usually when things turn to shit, and the departure of such a driving force of a director like Nolan can also be unsettling. But if Nolan feels like he’s done everything he can with the character, I say don’t force it.
The Dark Knight is certainly a tough act to follow, but it’s not impossible. And it isn’t like there aren’t talented directors out there that could bring something fresh and exciting to the character. There would definitely a framework and aesthetic that a new director would probably have to adhere to, but that’s not to say that they couldn’t infuse their Batman film with their own unique style.

Talented directors, sure. But talented AND passionate? Nolan surrounds himself by people that ‘get’ a concept and analyze it through to the core. It would take a Nolan or an Aronofsky at this point to excite me. You could say that Cameron himself would come on to do Batman tomorrow and I’d raise an eyebrow.

But you never really know what some directors are capable of, and how passionate they’ll be about a concept. Before Batman Begins, all Nolan had under his belt was Memento (great film, don’t get me wrong), and Insomnia, which a lot of people were split on. And they were both relatively small films. No one really knew for certain if he could handle the massive undertaking that would be Batman Begins.
I just feel like we put too many directors on pedastals, and we can’t count out a young upstart who may be hungry and ready to show Hollywood what they can do. Or maybe even a long-time pro that’s never had a shot at doing something on a scale of Batman.
