Am I Missing Something Here?

Call me crazy, but if I’m booking DJ Jazzy Jeff for a show, I’m not going to shut him down for playing hip-hop music. But that’s apparently what happened at a show he performed in Kansas City, this past Saturday. According to Allhiphop, Jeff and rapper Skillz were told to end their set, otherwise police would be called. While the promoters claim that Jeff’s set was ended due to improper sound levels, many speculate that they were unhappy with him playing hip-hop music. DJ Jazzy Jeff spoke with the Kansas City Star newspaper about the incident:
“My road manager walked up to me and said they were having problems with the music I was playing. I played three more songs and he comes back. I knew something was wrong.”
“They said I had to kick Skillz off the stage, change the format of the music I was playing or quit. They said if I continued playing they had 30 cops ready to come escort me off stage. So I stopped.”
It all seems rather odd to me. It does seem strange to think that a promoter would book someone like DJ Jazzy Jeff, and boot him for the reason Jeff is giving. That’s like hiring a stripper for a bachelor party, and kicking her out whe she started taking her clothes off. But can we really believe the promoter’s claims that Jeff’s sound technicians were maxing out the equipment to the point of risking damage? Even if they were, it’s DJ Jazzy Jeff! Blow the speakers out for all I care!
