FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS…

How can I see the movie?

“Akira’s Hip Hop Shop” has been playing at film festivals and college campuses around the country since 2007. Please sign up for the newsletter and visit this site for updates.

How long is the short?

The short film is available in two versions: a 22 minute Film Festival cut and the award-winning (and filmmaker preferred) 37 minutes long Director’s cut.

What are the differences between the two cuts?

The difference is basically the amount of time we spend with the supporting cast. Daphne’s (black) boyfriend and Akira’s best friend Jeremy. There’s a “where are they now” montage at the end of the director’s cut and some outtakes/bloopers.

For the festival version, it’s hard to make someone meet, fall in love, fall out of love and get back together in 22 minutes. It’s a credit to my extraordinary performers that it works at all in the shorter version. The director and the cast all prefer the longer version, but most film festivals limit short films to 25 minutes or less.

Is that the guy who plays Ando in NBC’s hit series “HEROES”?

Yes, that’s James Kyson Lee who plays Ando Masahashi. James was also responsible for the casting of Emayatzy Corinealdi (Daphne), convincing Joe to audition her after he’d seen over 40 actresses.

James grew up back East and was even a member of a rap group in Boston!

What are your future plans for the movie?

Our goal is to turn “Akira” into a feature length film and, down the line, a possible television series. It would be similar in spirit to the short, but expand on the concept and theme.

There is a feature screenplay written and the project is in active development. Several “name” actors are attached to the project. We are seeking financing and distribution prior to shooting.
