I got my dvd in the mail yesterday (Looks like I spoke too soon.) I watched the Director’s Cut and the regular version. The Director’s Cut was the best version in my opinion, It allowed the viewer’s to get a look a closer and realistic view instead of leaving it to their imagination. Joe, despite its “shortness” it was still a beautiful movie, there was a realness the main actors provided that I can relate to. I watched it four times last night! and it left me thirsting for more, I will be waiting for you to make a longer version or a part two. Wow, the fact that you did what movies like “Romeo must Die” was afraid to do earns my full respect. Damn it, that movie makes me wonder.

HI, I really enjoyed your film, are you planing on making it a full length movie.
Also I am a sophomore at The University of Texas at Austin and I am focusing on creating artistic films/animation. I’m interested and how did you g into the film business? Where I an see your first documentary and is the Akira DVD going to be sold in stores like FRYS or Wal-mart)?

I got into the business thru hustling and grinding. My first big “break” was as a PA (Production Assistant) on BOYZ N THE HOOD. If you check the PRESS section of this website you’ll find some links to interviews.

Are you planning on making a full length film/ production of Akira?
Yep. But it’s going to take a lot of luck and hard work. Probably an equal amount of both. And I can only control one.

Are the bonus features on the film discuss your view point/ have the actors speak on what there view is on the project. How have Blacks/Asians responded to the movie ( has there been any negative/positive feedback?) ( Just curious). And what else do you have in store for us ( more movies in production maybe?).
Yes, I discuss why and how I made the film on the “making of” 10 minute documentary. Also, both James and Emayatzy speak about their roles and preparation.
Both Blacks and Asians have responded with all kinds of different comments. Most positive. Some criticism. I welcome the discussion on the topic at all frankly.
I’m working on a variety of other projects in addition to the Akira feature.

Is their a lot of blatant racism in Japan or is it a fear of foreigners? ( because I’m black and was wondering if I would be heavily discriminated against?)

Everyone’s experience is different, of course, but I didn’t find the Japanese overtly racist at all. I know there’s prejudiced people there (heck I’m a fan of WW II docs and know what Japan did in Asia to their fellow Asian brothers) but I wouldn’t say it’s blatant racism there.
Their society isn’t perfect (witness suicide rate, isolation, child porn, etc.) but no worse than what happens here in America. You should check out http://www.blacktravels.com/japan.htm for more info or, better yet, meet and talk to some Japanese folks and judge for yourself!
