Hey folks. I’m off to the hometown, Detroit, this weekend for the screening of another documentary short I made about a different story I’m trying to bring to the screen along with AKIRA.

“MOTOWN MIRACLE” DOCUMENTARY TO SCREEN AT INAUGURAL DETROIT WINDSOR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Friday June 27th is Hockey Night at the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival.
“Motown Miracle on Ice”, a 26 minute documentary on the Detroit Rockies hockey team directed by Joe Doughrity, plays with “Freezer Geezers” at the Wayne State Law School. $5 tickets are available at www.DWIFF.org.
“Motown Miracle” is the story of The Detroit Rockies, a predominantly black team coached by two black fathers who never played hockey and a white Canadian transplant to Michigan named Robert Evangelista. The team was part of the Little Caesar’s Hockey League (Midget AA) and started at the inner city’s Jack Adams arena. They won a national championship in Lake Placid, New York in 1995. The film plays at 7 pm. It’s currently being developed as a television/film project.

“Freezer Geezers” follows 83 year old coach Ray Tuller and his team – Millenium 75’s – from Springfield, MA, as they challenge three other teams from around the world competing in the world’s oldest age division (75 and over) in the annual Snoopy’s Senior World Hockey Tournament created by beloved artist Charles Schulz in Santa Rosa, California. The story is sometimes hilarious and sentimental, but always inspiring. This film by local filmmakers Denn Pietro, Denver Rochon will play at 9 pm It is like Cocoon meets The Mighty Ducks… meets The Bad News Bears meets Grumpy Old Men! ABOUT DWIFF
The Inaugural Detroit Windsor International Film Festival (DWIFF) takes place on June 26-29, 2008, nestled between RiverDays, the North American International Fireworks, CityFest and Windsor’s Summerfest. The DWIFF celebrates the region’s love for film and pride in the burgeoning film production industry.
The DWIFF offers many activities sprinkled across the shared landscape of Detroit and Windsor. Film related panels, workshops and other activities will be offered, along with screenings.
ABOUT JOE DOUGHRITY
Joe Doughrity is a screenwriter, director and documentary filmmaker. He began his careeer as an assistant to Oscar nominated director John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood). Signed by Creative Artists Agency in his early 20s, Joe enjoyed a successful career as a professional screenwriter. After watching many of his scripts languish in development, he decided to make his own films. His first effort, “Seven Days in Japan”, won Best Documentary at the San Diego Comic-con International Film Festival in 2005. His second film, “Akira’s Hip Hop Shop”, won the Directors Guild of America’s student film award in November of 2007. Joe is a graduate of Columbia College and a member of the Writers Guild of America.
