Life imitates art
I just got back from Detroit over the holiday weekend. I was there to celebrate the union of two friends who met during the production of Akira’s Hip Hop Shop. A real life romance that blossomed into marriage!

Ralph Wilson was the Executive Producer of the AHHS short film. When I decided to make the film he was the first person to write me a check. We’d become friends a couple of years earlier having met at a black networking mixer at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2005.
Devon Patterson (nee Wilson) is a longtime friend who I grew up with in Detroit. A talented and hard working sista, Devon came out to Cali in the early 90s and quickly established herself in the movie game as one of the biz’s top costumers/costume designers.
Devon made a stunning bride. The affair had an ‘India meets Scifi’ theme.
They went all-out for the wedding and since both are big science fiction fans the ceremony reflected their interests with the couple entering the reception to the Star Wars theme and even having a STAR TREK wedding cake! The band was Morris Day and The Time, which made us ’80’s babies’ get up out of our seats and groove to “Cool”, “777-9311″ and “The Walk” among other jams. I even got some face time with the legend himself.
The great Morris Day can still rock a party like no other. Yeeees!
Posing with The Man.
I wish Ralph and Devon, currently honeymooning in Dubai, eternal happiness. And I get the sneaking suspicion that, if we’re able to turn AHHS into the feature film I envision, it won’t be the only marriage the story will inspire.
