No to NY, Yes to LA

Due to scheduling problems, the New York screening of “Akira’s Hip Hop Shop” has been canceled.

The film will be shown in Los Angeles as part of the Pan African Film Festival on Thursday February 14th at 6:20PM at the Magic Johnson Crenshaw 15 Theater. For ticket information please see the site. The film will also screen on Saturday February 16th at 11:20 AM.

I can’t think of a better day than Valentine’s Day to showcase our romantic, 21st century couple! Hopefully you can come out and join us. There will be a Q&A following the screening. Industry folk should contact the Pan African Film Festival staff or me directly.

Also it appears we’ve fixed our newsletter problem, so be sure you sign up via the link on the top of the front page. This way you can be kept up to date on screenings, news, developments with the feature, etc.

May is Asian American Heritage Month and we’ve been invited to a couple of colleges to screen the movie and talk race relations. I’ll announce the first school and date in the next e-blast. If you want us to visit your campus drop me a line.

I’m a grad student at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and as you know, Chicago is a very diverse city. As a black woman that is open to all types of ethnicities and races, I am really interested in this movie, and would love to see it. I know it would be well received here. In my opinion, this movie can help to start breaking down a few of the barriers that keep relationships of this type from being accepted (or even started). The main reason, it seems, that AM/BF relationships are very rare is because each race assumes that the other isn’t interested due to stereotypes and etc. But anyway, I think you have a really good thing here, and you should definitely make a stop at my campus!

It seems like alot of African American women are open to the idea of dating Asian Men, it’s just the Asian Men that don’t seem very willing, and if they are they seem to be “ghetto”. This is very rare, and it’s very sad considering we’re in year 2008 and we still have these problems. Asian Men in my opinion date almost EVERY race BUT African American Women, most of the time, partially Korean’s. A lot of it has to do with the bad image the media has given African American women, their looked upon as being uneducated, living in poverty, drop-outs, whores/sluts/ho’s, unable to speak proper english, physically unattractive, getting pregant constantly, extremely aggressive, lazy, on drugs, violent, obnoxious/loud, ghetto, barbaric, always angry, filthy, and with no etiquette. Very stupid stero-types. Not every African American Woman is like this, and anytime I’ve seen this type of couple together they always seem to get nasty looks by the Asian Women, Black Men, and the Elders (asian elders mostly). *sighs* Asians seperate themselves from other races alot, not just African Americans, so they’re the ones that need to change. One day…one day this won’t be an issue, but this movie is a step forward. Please forgive me if I’ve in any way caused any offense to anyone, It’s not intended. God Bless.
